A metaphorical notion of a fantasy world

The "clown" - and the circus as its condition and background - become a self-portrait of the artist, a symbol and metaphor of something that is outside the normal acting and thinking, in short, a deformation, a hyperbole, a parody.

It is no coincidence, then, that an artist like Fernand Léger (1881-1955), who lived the turbulent years of the historical avant-gardes in the front row, devoted the last part of his life to deepening the theme of the circus, expanding the metaphorical notion of this fantasy world to an even more subjective identification, in which the vitality and freedom of the circus world clearly refer to the personal events of this artist so little inclined to school fixity but always ready to develop any creative stimulus in a very personal artistic discourse.
